6th Annual Megan Savage Memorial 5K - Record Breaking Numbers for Megan’s Run!!

September 25th, 2010 was a day of sunshine and blue skies at the 6th Annual Megan Savage Memorial Run for a Cure! 905 registrants made the event a huge success with record breaking numbers raising $42,000 for childhood cancer!

Megan’s Wings and the Savage family wishes to thank all our corporate sponsors! We couldn’t do half of what we do without your funding! Thank you! A special thanks goes out to all our wonderful volunteers (100+) who help make this event run so smoothly. Runner’s Image, times races all over Southern California, and claims “Megan’s Run is the most organized, well ran running event he times,”....thanks to you!

Each year this event has grown in size bringing awareness and hope to childhood cancer. Inspired by the memory of Megan Savage who lost her life to Leukemia at the age of 9, the Savage family hosts this special event in September in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and to raise money for Patient Aid Programs their foundation provides to pediatric oncology families within Southern California.

The event is so much more than a Run/Walk for Cancer. It has become an “Avenue of Hope” for families affected by childhood cancer and a “Community Resource” providing everyday people touched by cancer a way to remember their loved ones and make a difference in the search for a cure!

The morning activities included a 1K Kid’s Fun Run, 5K Run/Walk, a spectacular raffle & silent auction, a continental breakfast for participants under the gazebo, and live music by the fabulous band “King Heat”. New this year was a Pancake Breakfast hosted by Upland Foothill Kiwanis Club, a sponsor for this years event! Breakfast sold out so get your pancake ticket early next year! Participants added their mark to “Butterfly Banners of Hope” which Megan’s Wings takes to Children’s Hospitals showing children with cancer their support! Many participants “Go the Extra Mile” collecting donations for their individual race! Every penny helps!

The morning activities ended with a live butterfly release in memory of loved ones lost to cancer. Three hundred butterflies were released at McCarthy Park under Megan’s tree and butterfly garden...another record! Vocalist, Madison Shearer accompanied by Garrett Prater, childhood friends of Megan’s sang, “One More Day” just before the release in tribute to their friend. “Many childhood friends of Megan’s participate every year in this event,” says Kim Savage, Megan’s mom. “It warms our heart to know they want to be apart of this event each year to remember their friend. One of the worst fears after losing a child is people will forget your child. I know they’ll never forget her, and that means so much to us.”
