Patient Aid

Bill Pay Assistance

We understand the financial strain a childhood cancer diagnosis brings.  Our Bill Pay Assistance (formerly, Patient Aid Request) should be submitted by a Medical Social Worker and is intended to assist a family (one time) who is experiencing financial difficulties due to lost income caring for a sick child.  Aid is meant to help get the family through a difficult financial crisis or catch up with bills they’ve gotten behind on due to missed work caring for their sick child. A list of possible one time aid is included but not limited to: gas and grocery cards, medical or utility bill assistance, housing assistance, help with transportation expenses such as repairing a vehicle used to bring a child to treatment or a car payment, alternative nutrition or therapies not covered by insurance, and funeral assistance. We will review each request carefully, and award aid based on sufficient documentation of need and availability of funds. Limitations and restrictions will be used to ensure assistance is not abused.

Monthly Assistance

We understand the financial strain a childhood cancer diagnosis brings. Monthly assistance will be awarded to help a family for consecutive months when they are experiencing extreme financial difficulties due to parents need to take a leave of absence from work to care for their critically ill child.  Aid will come in the form of gas, grocery or partial rent/mortgage assistance.  We require sufficient documentation of need, and aid will be awarded based on availability of funds & need. Limitations and restrictions will be used to ensure assistance is not abused.

Many pediatric oncology families are feeling the financial strain of rising gas prices and trying to get their child to treatment each month. Megan's Wings is here to help. Megan's Wings Gas Assistance Application can be submitted by a parent/caretaker of a child currently in treatment for cancer or by a medical professional such as a social worker, child life specialist, nurse or doctor submitting the application on behalf of the pediatric oncology family experiencing financial distress due to the extreme gas prices.  To qualify, the family must live 15 mi or more (one way) from the child's treatment center, and travels to treatment a minimum, of 4 times a month, or 45 miles to treatment 2 times a month. This program is open to any pediatric oncology patient living in and receiving treatment from a Hospital or Cancer Center located in Southern California. Each family can qualify for up to $200 in gas assistance which can be distributed monthly for 4 consecutive months or as a one time $200 lump sum. This program has limited funding and is on a 1st come 1st serve basis. Megan’s Wings was founded in January 2005 in memory of 9 yr old Megan Savage who lost her Leukemia battle on April 2nd, 2003. During Megan’s 2 1/2 yr struggle with cancer, the Savage family met other families struggling to cope financially and emotionally. It’s often necessary for a parent to cut back hours at work or one parent quit work to care for their sick child. Money eventually runs short to pay the bills & expenses increase such as gas expense for numerous appointments and hospital stays, phone calls to family, meals away from home, increased medical bills. Treatment often stretches into years with relapse, making it difficult to recover financially, even with savings. It is our wish to help ease the financial burden and foster hope through caring so families can concentrate on their sick child.
